What are the top products you need to avoid in your home...

The endocrine system is a group of glands distributed throughout the body that produce hormones for normal bodily function. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are group of chemicals that interfere with the action of hormones.

1. Phthalates Are An ‘endocrine-disrupting Chemical’

Phthalates are a class of man-made chemicals widely used in cosmetics and personal care products.human exposure through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact.

They are usually

found

in...

personal care products, cosmetics, plastics, and cleaning products including vinyl flooring, adhesives, detergents, lubricating oils, automotive plastics, plastic clothes (rain coats), soaps, shampoos, hair sprays, nail polishes, plastic packaging film, garden hoses, inflatable toys and some childrens toys. Phthalates are linked with increased risk of thyroid dysfunction, endometriosis, PCOS, early puberty, early menopause, and fertility concerns

If phthalates are present in your personal care products, they are likely to be labelled as one or more of the following and are best avoided:

DBP (dibutylphthalate)

DEP (diethylphthalate)

DEHP (diethylhexyl phthalate)

DiBP (diisobutyl phthalate)

DMP (dimethyl phthalate)

DnBP (dinbutyl phthalate)

MBP (mononbutyl phthalate)

MCPO (monocarboxyoctyl phthalate)

Phthalate

2. Bisphenols (BPA and ‘BPA-Free’ plastic products)

Bisphenols are used to make plastics. The problem with bisphenols is that they can mimic oestrogens and disrupt oestrogen metabolism. This is hugely impactful for egg and sperm quality, it can also impact weight.

Research is also showing that BPA free plastic can be harmful in itself.

Daily tips:

Purchase food free of plastic packaging.

Use a stainless steel or glass water bottle.

Replace canned foods for glass (at minimum look for ‘BPA-free’ cans).

Use stainless steel, non treated wood utensils to cook with.

Store food in glass or stainless steel.

Do not heat food in plastic containers. Rather heat in pots over the stove or oven proof glass or ceramic.

3. Pesticides

Are sprayed over our fruits, vegetables and crops. The health effects of pesticides depend on the type of pesticide used. Some, such as the organophosphates and carbamates, affect the nervous system. Others may irritate the skin or eyes. Some pesticides may be carcinogens. Others may affect the hormone or endocrine system in the body.

Daily tips:

Choose organic as much as possible. A great place to start is by following the ‘

Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen

’ guide which dictates those fruits and vegetables with the lowest and highest pesticide residue

4. Parabens

Like phthalates, parabens are widely used as a preservative in personal care products and processed foods. These chemicals are linked with diminished ovarian reserve, reduced testosterone, sperm motility, abnormal sperm morphology and increased DNA fragmentation.

Daily tips:

Read the labels of your personal care products and use paraben-free alternatives. Particularly look at toothpaste, sunscreen, body lotion, facial lotion, hand soap, hair products and cosmetics.

5. Heavy metals

Heavy metals including aluminium, lead, copper, and mercury are commonly found in tap water, and can have deleterious effects on brain health, egg quality, sperm quality, and hormonal balance.

Daily tips:

You can avoid heavy metals and help reduce your toxic load by investing in a water filter. There are two key criteria to follow when choosing a water filter–

1. The filter must be 0.5 micron or below

2. It must filter out fluoride!

Melanie's Weekly Self Care Tip

As soon as you wake up, open the curtains, even if you aren't hopping out of bed immediately.

The sunlight will hit your eyes and generate wake-up hormones and serotonin, and you will wake up so much easier! I remember when willow was a baby I'd bring her in to bed to breastfeed when she woke at 6am, and I used to keep the curtains shut and found it so hard to actually get out of bed but as soon as I started getting sunlight onto me I felt so much more awake.

Motherhood:

We went away this week to Mount Martha and it was just another healthy reminder to surrender in motherhood. As we were on our way down the beach, Hunter spiked a fever and was so unwell for the next 4 days with a temp of close to 40 degrees, lethargic, napping a lot, and a sore throat. We couldn't do much at all. I was so excited to spend entire days at the beach, lunches at cafes, Arthurs seat chair lift, etc but we spent most of the time relaxing around. I had 4 hours sleep for the first two nights because her fever was so high and she was so unwell. I had such high expectations and felt like I had failed the other two girls on the holiday because I was so disappointed at how little we did. It felt like the perfect mother myth, I imagined a perfect holiday, it didn't turn out that way, and I felt guilty that it didn't and was so attached to the idea of really long beach days swimming in the girls but we spent majority of the time inside the airbnb (the weather was really crappy too).

Show

OMG Your Honor Season 2 has come out, it's on Stan and we loved Season 1. The first season is about a judge's son who kills a boy during a hit and run. After finding out, the judge realises that the boy he killed is the son of the biggest crime boss and he tries desperately to protect his own son by hiding the crime - which goes against all of his convictions/morals.
